In case you are wondering what purple tea is, it’s the champagne of teas. Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure that combines scenic landscapes, a refreshing waterfall, and a taste of Kenyan tea culture? Join us for a thrilling one-day bike ride (all on tarmac) to a world-renowned tea farm and processor, nestled amidst the rolling hills of Thika. The Ride: Our journey begins with a de-brief at 7:00 AM at Thika Gymkhana. Wheels roll at 7.15 a.m. when we'll embark on a scenic, all tarmac, ride towards the farm. The route is a gradual uphill ride mostly between 1% and 3% gradients, with a few challenging hills as we get to the foothills of the Aberdares. The distance each way is 34.9km with an elevation of 590m from Thika to the farm. Those who wish to skip the waterfall and tea tasting could do a 10 km longer ride. Required Fitness: Being able to comfortably cycle for 20km non-stop is a good baseline for this ride. However, the breathtaking scenery and the anticipation of reaching the farm will surely fuel your motivation! A Feast for the Senses: As we cycle through the Kenyan countryside, lush greenery and rolling hills will greet us at every turn. Keep your eyes peeled for colorful birds and maybe even spot a few local farmers tending to their fields. The Farm Experience: Upon arrival at the farm, we'll be welcomed by the warm hospitality of the farm team. You'll have the unique opportunity to: Unwind at the Waterfall: Take a dip in the breathtaking waterfall cascading through the bamboo forest to cool off after your ride– the perfect way to rejuvenate. Please bring a pair of sneakers to change into and to trek to the waterfall. Tea Tasting: Fill your tummy up with tea and scones before attending a Essentials to Tea Tasting lesson. This is one time when it will not be rude to slurp your tea! Explore the Purple Tea Farm: Witness the vibrant purple hues of this unique tea variety, unlike anything you've seen before! Learn the Art of Tea Picking: Get your hands dirty (in the best way possible) and experience the traditional tea-picking process firsthand. It is suggested that you wear long pants for this activity to avoid getting scratched by the tea trees. Discover the Magic of Tea Processing: Witness the transformation of tea leaves from farm to cup, learning about the meticulous process that creates this delicious beverage. Enjoy a sumptuous 3 course Lunch: A 3 course meal with your choice of iced tea or water. You are welcome to bring other drinks, if you wish. If you bring and consume alcohol at the farm you will not be allowed to ride back to Thika, please make arrangements for a vehicle (other than the Cycling Odyssey support vehicle) to take you back. The Return Journey: After a day filled with adventure and learning, followed by a yummy lunch, we'll hop back on our bikes and cycle back to Thika, gently rolling down the hills that we climbed taking in the beauty of the Kenyan landscape once again. Important Note: Weather conditions in Thika are generally pleasant year-round, with warm days and cool evenings. Sunscreen, a hat, and a light rain jacket are recommended depending on the predicted weather. There will be a support vehicle following us for the ride where you can place your swimsuit, towel and other personal belongings in a bag. If you have family and friends who wish to join us, for the activities at the farm, but not ride, they are welcome to join too. Please ask them to register for the ride and pay, but indicate that they will not be riding Ready to Join the Ride? This one-day cycling adventure is perfect for anyone seeking a unique blend of exercise, cultural immersion, and a taste of Kenyan hospitality. So, dust off your bike, and pedal with us into adventure!
