Pebbles & Pattern: Mixed Media Explorations Inspired by Brighton Beach
About this Event
Join us at Liberation Art Gallery for a relaxing mixed-media workshop inspired by one of Brighton's most iconic landscapes, the pebble beach.
Rather than creating realistic drawings, we'll use the shapes, textures and colours of beach pebbles as a starting point for creative exploration. Through a series of gentle exercises and demonstrations, you'll discover how a simple natural object can inspire abstract compositions, expressive mark-making and beautiful layered artworks.
Perfect for beginners and curious creatives alike, this workshop encourages experimentation over perfection, helping you build confidence as you explore a range of exciting materials and techniques.
🎨 What you'll explore
Throughout the session, you'll experiment with a variety of creative processes including:
- Drawing and observational sketching
- Exploring shape, rhythm and repeating patterns
- Creating acetate stencils inspired by pebble forms
- Expressive mark-making
- Layering collage and textured papers
- Flowing inks and colour washes
- Oil pastel and chalk pastel techniques
- Mixed-media composition
Working intuitively, you'll combine these materials to create a unique artwork inspired by the quiet beauty of Brighton's shoreline.
🌊 Creativity Inspired by Nature
Brighton's beach is full of subtle colours, weathered textures and endlessly varied shapes. By slowing down and observing these details, we begin to see familiar objects in new ways.
This workshop encourages curiosity and play, showing how artists can transform simple observations into expressive and personal imagery.
You'll leave with a collection of sketches, experiments, and a finished mixed-media artwork, along with plenty of ideas to continue exploring at home.
🌿 Creativity for Wellbeing
Working with natural forms can be deeply grounding. The repetitive shapes of pebbles, the layering of colour and texture, and the freedom to experiment without worrying about getting things "right" create a calming and mindful creative experience.
This is an opportunity to slow down, become absorbed in the making process, and enjoy the simple pleasure of exploring materials.
✨ Perfect for Beginners
If you've ever wondered where artists get their ideas, this workshop offers a glimpse into the creative process.
Rather than focusing on producing a perfect finished picture, you'll learn how artists develop ideas through sketching, experimentation and play. It's a wonderful introduction to mixed media and a chance to discover new materials in a relaxed, supportive environment.
