Pearl Harbor (M, 2001) 25th Anniversary Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House Perth
In the months leading up to December 7, 1941, American fighter pilots Rafe McCawley (Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (Josh Hartnett) are best friends and fellow pilots stationed in Hawaii. When Rafe falls in love with Navy nurse Evelyn Johnson (Kate Beckinsale), a beautiful and intelligent woman who represents the future both men hope to build, a love triangle emerges that threatens their friendship. After Rafe is transferred to Britain to fight in the European theater, Danny and Evelyn grow closer, leading to genuine romantic feelings. But before their relationship can develop, Japan launches a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, destroying the American fleet and killing thousands. The attack transforms everything—bringing America into World War II and forcing Rafe and Danny to channel their personal conflicts into a mission of revenge against the Japanese forces responsible for the devastation.
Director Michael Bay brings his signature visual spectacle to this 2001 historical drama, creating a film that balances intimate personal relationships with massive action sequences. The attack sequence itself is rendered with extraordinary technical detail—from the destruction of battleships to the chaos of wounded sailors to the bravery of those who fought back despite overwhelming odds. Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett bring genuine charm to their characters' friendship and romantic rivalry, while Kate Beckinsale provides emotional grounding as the woman caught between them. The film's three-hour runtime allows time for character development alongside the spectacular battle sequences. Hans Zimmer's sweeping orchestral score captures both the romance of the pre-attack sequences and the tragedy of war. The cinematography by John Schwartzman emphasizes both intimate moments and epic scale. While some criticize the film's focus on romance amid historical tragedy, it succeeds in making the personal stakes of warfare tangible.
