Peak Jazz Series: Ben Sherman Quartet

A rising talent on New York City's vibrant jazz scene, Ben Sherman combines a deep respect for the music's rich history with a fresh, adventurous approach to improvisation and composition. His playing is expressive, inventive and firmly rooted in the jazz tradition, while always looking for new possibilities.
Sherman's musical journey began in middle school, and by his teenage years, he was already making his way into New York City's legendary jazz jam sessions, learning firsthand from the musicians who make the city's jazz scene one of the most exciting in the world. Along the way, he studied with acclaimed saxophonists Abraham Burton and Tim Berne, developing a musical voice that balances technical command with creativity and emotional depth.
Despite his young age, Sherman has already shared the bandstand with an impressive array of musicians, including Joel Ross, Emmet Cohen, William Parker, Isaiah J. Thompson, Anthony Hervey and Winard Harper. He has also toured with Freedom First, a powerful musical project featuring Keith LaMar, and performs regularly at celebrated jazz venues including The Jazz Gallery and Smalls Jazz Club.
With the Ben Sherman Quartet, he brings together a group of talented young musicians who share his passion for exploration and musical conversation. Current quartet members are Roman Goron on piano, Solomon Gottfried on bass, Jacob Patrone on drums, and Ben on saxophone. The quartet's sound draws on the energy and sophistication of classic jazz while embracing the spontaneity and fresh ideas of today's generation of players. Expect inventive arrangements, expressive solos and the kind of musical interplay that makes small-group jazz so exciting.
At Caffè Lena, where every nuance can be heard and the connection between musicians and audience is immediate, the Ben Sherman Quartet offers a chance to experience an emerging jazz voice up close.
Come hear where the next generation is taking jazz.
