Peaceful (De son Vivant) - Screening followed by Q&A with Dr. Gabriel Sara

Synopsis:

A son (Benoit Magimel) in denial of a serious illness. A mother (Catherine Deneuve) facing the unbearable. And between them a doctor (Gabriel Sara) fighting to bring them to acceptance. The three of them have one year and four seasons to come together and understand what it means to die while living.

Starring in his own role next to some of the greatest French actors, Dr. Gabriel Sara, who recently retired from Mount Sinai oncology department, received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival for incarnating a “quietly heroic version of himself” (Variety). He is, in the words of director Emmanuelle Bercot, the inspiration behind the movie: “The film is inspired by Sara’s work. I had met him and he spoke to me a lot about how he works and so part of the film and the character is inspired by him. But I had planned to cast an actor for the role. It’s a character who is very humane, who has no cynicism. He’s a really exceptional person and I couldn’t see a French actor who could play this part.”

Con-solatio

Since 2014, members of Con-solatio have been present in Cobble Hill and Carrol Gardens, reaching out to members of the community, and particularly to those most in need of presence and friendship: the elderly living at the Cobble Hill Nursing Home on Henry Street. In order to promote a more compassionate attitude towards those in need, Con-solatio organizes a variety of cultural activities.

We are organizing this wonderful event for our community in January: a screening of Emmanuel Bercot’s “Peaceful (De son vivant)”. As we all recover from the trauma of a worldwide pandemic, this timely and poignant movie casts a compassionate and courageous gaze on suffering and death as well as on the challenges and rewards of the medical professions.
