About this Event
This talk explores popular agitation for peace during the English Civil Wars. It tells the neglected stories of ordinary men and women — from provincial petitioners and pamphleteers to radical soldiers and religious visionaries — who sought remedies to the violent upheaval that engulfed their nation during the 1640s. Ultimately, it argues that widespread desire for peace helped to bring forth bold new ideas around democracy and representation.
William White is Lecturer in History at the University of Hertfordshire, having previously taught at the universities of Oxford and York. His research examines the political, religious and intellectual history of seventeenth century Britain, with a particular focus on the English Civil Wars. His first book examined the important role played by preachers during those conflicts and his second will explore how they transformed understandings of peace.
