We are thrilled to welcome South African pianist, scholar, and Blue Note recording artist Nduduzo Makhathini to Portland for one extraordinary night at The Old Church.
Makhathini arrives with his acclaimed 2024 album uNomkhubulwane, a deeply spiritual work rooted in the mythologies of the Nguni peoples of Southern Africa. Named for the rain goddess who regulates fertility through water, the album is as much cosmology as it is music, drawing on ingoma traditions to explore humanity's relationship with the natural and the divine.
A PhD musicologist at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a bandleader with 12 albums to his name, Makhathini has collaborated with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Shabaka Hutchings, the WDR Big Band, and Black Coffee, bringing an intellectual depth and improvisational brilliance that has made him one of the most vital voices in contemporary jazz.
