Join PDR at the Portland Art Museum next Friday at 1pm for informal gallery conversations centered on David Hockney’s work. These sessions pair two voices—focusing on different disciplines—to explore two artworks.About the Artist:
Hockney lost several friends to the AIDS epidemic and cancer in the 1980s and 1990s. To fill these emotional voids, he took comfort in the company of two loyal dachshunds named Stanley and Boodgie, who became his frequent portrait subjects. Stanley was named after Stan Laurel, one half of the slapstick comedy duo from earlier black-and-white film days, Laurel and Hardy, an act much beloved by his late father. Interestingly, two other artistic giants whom Hockney himself admired, Picasso and Andy Warhol, were also proud dog dads and likewise shared a love of mini dachshunds.
Dogs cannot come inside the museum, but we will have standard dachshund Schatzi in the courtyard immediately following the discussion inside!
