About this Event

PD Day Camp (CBE) - September 29th

Calling all animal enthusiasts in grades 1-6!

Calgary Humane Society Day Camps are a place where kids can connect with animals. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for children to interact and learn about the animals that share our world in fun and engaging ways! An enthusiastic team of instructors and friendly animal visitors give your child an enriching experience filled with fun activities, crafts and some hands-on animal encounters.

As they have fun, campers learn respect, compassion, and how to provide a lifetime of care for companion animals.

Activities are age and developmentally appropriate. For those campers wishing to attend multiple days of camp, we change the activites each PD day camp, ensuring diverse experiences.

Campers will learn about animal characteristics, behavior, proper pet care as well as having two (or more!) animal interactions during the day.

May my child attend if they have allergies?

If you’re child’s allergies are minor, controlled by Medic*tion and you’ve consulted your child’s physician, please sign up! Children will be spending limited amounts of time in the animal areas in the shelter and time outside as the weather permits. Please note, we are NOT a peanut free facility. Please consult with out Humane Education team for more info about peanuts and food allergies.

What is the best way to sign up for camp?

Registrations are processed on a first come, first served basis, online, through Eventbrite only. Your registration and payment must BOTH be completed before you are officially registered in the camp. If you are unable to complete your registration for any reason, please call or email us for assistance.

We cannot hold your child’s space in a camp unless they are fully registered. If camp registration is full, you may add your name to the waitlist, and you will be contacted by e-mail if a spot on the waitlist becomes available.

Once your registration is processed, a confirmation of enrollment will be e-mailed. Release forms, directions, and other pertinent information are included in the email. Signed release forms must be completed and received on the morning of camp. Children may not attend camp without completed forms.

Where does the program take place?

Camp takes place at the Calgary Humane Society – 4455 110 Ave SE, Calgary, Alberta

Parking information as well as drop off and pick up procedures will accompany confirmation of registration. We use both indoor classrooms and outdoor learning areas throughout our facility.

How is the camp organized?

Camp size is limited to 12 children and is led by a trained education facilitator and/or camp leader and volunteer assistants. Children in grades 1-6 will all be placed in the same group.

All children will need to bring a lunch as well as 2 light snacks and a bottle of water to camp. Children will be provided with the opportunity to eat a small snack or enjoy a drink at both mid-morning and mid-afternoon. If your child’s medical condition requires them to eat or drink at certain times please alert our camp staff prior to your child’s camp day. The Calgary Humane Society is NOT a peanut-free facility however we do request that parents avoid packing peanut products for the safety of all of our campers.

Will my child spend most of the day working directly with animals?

Everything we do at camp is aimed at teaching children about animal care, handling, and welfare. We strive to give our campers an opportunity to interact with several animals each day. However, we are an open-admissions animal shelter which cares for all animals including some that may be sick, injured, or have behavioural issues. Our ability to have kids interact with animals relies entirely on the types of animals who are in residence during the camp. Our two top priorities are to provide our campers with a safe experience and to prevent our resident animals from any undue stress. Some animals simply cannot handle the attention of a large group of children, and we endeavor to teach the children to respect the needs of each individual animal. That being said, when a gentle bunny, or a kid-loving dog, or playful bunch of kittens comes through the shelter, the camp kids are often given the opportunity to interact with them.

Please note: Activities are age specific. Animal interaction is dependent upon animal health on a day-to-day basis. We cannot guarantee specified types or amount of animal visits. We also do not garantee any petting, but will aim to choose animal visitors who are open to pets.
