Pawpaw Ice Cream?!?!?! Yes! And with the help of Milkweed Meadows Farm and other local Pawpaw growers this year we are able to deliver to all locations! The release takes place on Friday, October 11th and will feature both a dairy and vegan version. Additionally, Asheville GreenWorks will be visiting The Hop at 640 Merrimon Ave on Friday 10/11 from 3-6pm with information and a variety of Pawpaw seedlings for purchase. Co-owner of The Hop Ice Cream, Greg Garrison, says, “because of their continued and extensive efforts to improve this community we are always happy to partner with Asheville GreenWorks.”
The pawpaw tree’s fruit has a thin green skin, large brown seeds, and smooth, sunshine-yellow, custard-like flesh. Pawpaw is a deciduous, native, understory tree that grows in deep shade to full sunlight in moist, nutrient-rich forests. Their leaves are the sole food source for zebra swallowtail butterflies, also making the trees an important addition to pollinator gardens. “Pawpaws are a magical fruit with such a unique flavor - somewhere between mango, banana, vanilla and pineapple. It’s such a treat to be able to work with various local growers to make this ice cream possible on a larger scale,” says Ashley Garrison, Co-owner of The Hop.

About Milkweed Meadows Farm:
Located along Clear Creek just six miles east of downtown Hendersonville, Milkweed Meadows is a 5th generation family farm. Its grassy "bottoms" once nourished cows that produced milk sold to Biltmore Dairy Farms in Asheville. Today, the meadows are yielding milk of a different kind — milkweed plants to help sustain monarch butterflies!
An avid wildlife habitat gardener and environmental educator for over 25 years, farmer Kim Bailey has a true passion for pollinators. Over the past years, she has been expanding the farm's natural habitats for native milkweed species and planting additional host plants for other butterflies.
Living tunnels of passionvines, pipevines, climbing milkweeds, and hops vines benefit a diversity of species while an orchard of over 100 pawpaw trees specifically nurture zebra swallowtail larvae.
