Composer and pianist Paul Safar returns with his ensemble to close the season with original music that blends classical, jazz, and contemporary influences. His imaginative and accessible style offers something for every listener.
Violinist Julia Frantz and pianist Sandy Holder will join Safar for a concert that connects the threads between Paul's compositions and classical repertoire. Expect a varied set with some jazzy numbers plus the music of Bolcom, Boulanger, Brahms, Ives and Maddox!

Paul Safar is a versatile composer/performer and private piano instructor living and working in Eugene, Oregon. He was an Erik Satie Mostly Tonal Award winner as well as a finalist in the Fidelio Piano composition Competition. Commissioning ensembles include the Delgani String Quartet. Paul’s chamber music has been performed in cities from New York and Seattle to Havana and Fairbanks and his orchestral music by the Octava Chamber Orchestra and Orchestra Next. He has been a presenter at the New Music Gathering,through the Oregon Music Teachers Association and at the Zagreb Biennale. Having a background in both classical and jazz/rock, one of Paul’s goals is to coherently combine these influences in his compositions. He also enjoys cross cultural musical collaborations such as with the Catalan hurdy gurdy virtuoso, Marc Egea. Paul received his Bachelors degree from The University of Cincinnati (CCM) under Joel Hoffman and did graduate study at the University of Oregon under Robert Kyr. Julia Frantz has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral violinist throughout North America and Europe. A native of Eugene, she is currently Assistant Principal 2nd Violinist with the Eugene Symphony and also performs regularly with the Oregon Mozart Players, Eugene Concert Orchestra, and Orchestra Next. Julia has participated in music festivals throughout the United States and Europe, including the Round Top International Festival-Institute, National Repertory Orchestra, AIMS Institute in Austria, and Astoria Music Festival. Equally comfortable outside the realm of classical music, Julia has played fiddle since the age of five and regularly performs with country, rock, and hip hop groups throughout Oregon. Julia received her Bachelor of Music degree at Rice University and Master of Music degree at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Sandy Holder was raised in Louisville, Kentucky, where she studied piano and voice at the Youth Performing Arts High School. She began her career as a freelance pianist at age 14 and was awarded a scholarship at 16 from the University of Kentucky to study with David Doran. She received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory, studying with Russian pianist Lidia Frumkin. She completed a Master of Music at the University of Oregon, studying with Victor Steinhardt. Sandy has worked with the Eugene Symphony, Eugene Opera, Oregon Symphony, Eugene Children’s Choirs, Oregon Festival of American Music, Oregon Mozart Players, and the Oregon Bach Festival. She has performed in numerous recitals at the University of Oregon and Lane Community College.
