Paul Lewis | Mozart II

Internationally renowned British pianist Paul Lewis invites you to experience Mozart’s piano sonatas in a new light.
In this programme, Mozart’s restrained and intimate Piano Sonata No 17 and the charming, operatic No 13 are placed alongside works by Chopin and Schubert. Schubert’s deeply lyrical and introspective 3 Klavierstücke was written in the final year of the composer’s life, and expresses sudden contrasts between light and darkness. Chopin’s Polonaise – a Polish national dance – with its dramatic, patriotic style, was written whilst he was in Paris, living in exile from Poland. Meanwhile his Nocturnes fall within his most poetic period. Intimate and vocally inspired, the works move beyond pure beauty into emotional complexity.
Through these pairings, we’ll explore both contrasts and unexpected connections. Join us for a fresh look at this rich and often underrated corner of the piano repertoire.
