Ok, yes, Paul is originally from Tassie…

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Paul Cutlan describes ‘Pan-Demon’s Band’–this one-off gathering of special friends in the improvised music scene–as his 60th birthday present to himself. The word ‘demon’ conjures images of an evil, devilish spirit, while ‘pandemonium’ is a common term for utter chaos and noisy disorder. However, Britannica online clarifies the ancient Greek origin of the word daimōn, as referring to a spirit or supernatural being. So in the context of ‘pandemonium', we hear ‘every spirit’.

This 60 minute performance will see continuously evolving groups of one to five people communicating in sound, immersed in the ongoing narrative, and bringing their individual voices to the mix.

This stella gathering features Sandy Evans, Andrew Robson, Sam Gill, Phillip Johnston (saxes), Phillippa Murphy-Haste (clarinet and viola), James Greening (trombone), Gary Daley (accordion), Ollie Miller (cello), Chloe Kim, Holly Conner, Nic Cecire (drums), Lloyd Swanton and Steve Elphick (double bass). Cross-sections of many iconic bands are represented, including Ten Part Invention, The Catholics, Clarion Fracture Zone, The Greasy Chicken Orchestra, Bungarribee, Microfiche, Scattered, and the Andrew Robson Trio.

‘Pan-Demon’s Band’ is a celebration of empathy, friendship and the spiritual potential of sound.
