Spring release! Paul Brody's second album of electro-acoustic compositions. Embedded in the eclectic landscape are the voices of well known Berlin-based writers reading their humorous, edgy, and thought-provoking texts.

Through sampling techniques especially developed for his performance, Brody changes recorded voices into musical instruments, blending them with ambient electronics, lyrical trumpet, piano, and random found objects. Bassist, Lisa Hoppe, will join with her grooves and bass based sound poetry!

The compositions and improvisations will be in dialogue with the voice-melodies and nuances of the poet's voices; and launch wild improvisations. 

Brody is well known for his language-music experiments, which has led him to create sound installations for the Canadian Language Museum, and win Artist in Residences at the Museums Quartier in Vienna and the Munich Kammerspiele. His operatic sound installation, Paradise Found, commissioned by the Badisches Staatstheater, recently won a FAUST Theater prize nomination. 

Poetry Electric is Brody's passion project, and features the compositional ideas of his sound installation work with an adventurous and performative aspect.

Prefabricated tracks, samples thrown in and trumpet solos born of the moment, ranging from a squeak to a hymn, make Brody’s performances an experience in their own right. The noisily atmospheric and the distinctively peeling, the melodic and the rhythmic enter into a liaison that gives the lyrics a second life. After centuries of closeness, the contemporary poem and the song have a hard time with each other for many reasons. The way in which Brody’s music takes on the voices of poets from different languages and regions, without completely assimilating them, perhaps there is a future that we no longer dare to hope for.

Frühjahrsrelease! Paul Brodys zweites Album mit elektro-akustischen Kompositionen. Eingebettet in die vielseitige Klanglandschaft sind die Stimmen bekannter Berliner Autor*innen, die ihre humorvollen, scharfkantigen und nachdenklichen Texte lesen.

Mit speziell für seine Performances entwickelten Sampling-Techniken verwandelt Brody aufgenommene Stimmen in musikalische Instrumente und mischt sie mit Ambient-Elektronik, lyrischer Trompete, Klavier und zufällig gefundenen Alltagsobjekten. Bassistin Lisa Hoppe bringt ihre Grooves und bassbasierte Klangpoesie mit ein!

Die Kompositionen und Improvisationen treten in Dialog mit den Stimm-Melodien und Nuancen der Dichter*innen – und entfesseln wilde Improvisationen.

Brody ist bekannt für seine sprach-musikalischen Experimente, die ihn zu Klanginstallationen für das Canadian Language Museum geführt haben und ihm Artist-in-Residence-Stipendien am MuseumsQuartier Wien und an den Münchner Kammerspielen einbrachten. Seine Opern-Klanginstallation Paradise Found, eine Auftragsarbeit des Badischen Staatstheaters, wurde kürzlich für den FAUST-Theaterpreis nominiert.

Poetry Electric ist Brodys Herzensprojekt und verbindet die kompositorischen Ideen seiner Klanginstallationen mit abenteuerlicher, performativer Energie.

Auf dem neuen Album sind Texte von Uljana Wolf, Michael Krüger, Ellen Hinsey, Tom Bresemann, Tomas Venclova und weiteren Autor*innen zu hören.

Vorgefertigte Tracks, hineingeworfene Samples und Trompetensoli, die im Moment entstehen und vom Quietschen bis zur Hymne reichen, machen Brodys Performances zu einem Erlebnis für sich. Das geräuschhaft Atmosphärische und das markant Hervortretende, das Melodische und das Rhythmische gehen eine Liaison ein, die den Texten ein zweites Leben gibt. Nach Jahrhunderten enger Verwandtschaft haben es das zeitgenössische Gedicht und das Lied aus vielen Gründen schwer miteinander. Doch wie Brodys Musik die Stimmen von Dichter*innen verschiedener Sprachen und Regionen aufnimmt, ohne sie vollständig zu vereinnahmen – vielleicht liegt darin eine Zukunft, an die wir kaum noch zu hoffen wagten.
