In 1966 scientists completed a six-year effort to drill through the Greenland ice sheet at Camp Century, a secret, nuclear-powered cold-war military base housed in tunnels dug in the ice. Subsequent analysis of the cores revealed how Earth’s climate changed over the past 125,000 years. For 30 years, the lowest 12 feet, a frozen soil core, were lost until found in a Copenhagen freezer. Professor Paul Bierman’s lab at UVM was able to date the soil and determine that Camp Century was ice-free 416,000 years ago, raising sea levels as much as 25 feet - a warning for the future. Bierman’s research has taken him around the globe. In Greenland, he and his graduate students are tracing the comings and going of Greenland’s ice sheet over millions of years. This talk will take the audience back in time and examine Greenland through the lens of both natural and human history and discuss the implications of his findings for our future.
