About this Event

Patterns of place: Decoration, adornment and collective placemaking

Saturday 14th March, 10-2pm

Why have humans always adorned the spaces they love? What is decorative art and why do we love it? How is the world around us already patterned? And how might we bring our love of the place in which we live to adorn the walls of The Convivial?

Join artist Phoebe Deeprose and The Convivial host Sophie Craven for a day of collecting patterns from in and around Penryn for incorporation into a mural for the walls of The Convivial’s learning space.

Over the course of the day, we will learn about the history of adornment and decorative art, go on a solo or pair walk around Penryn to collect patterns, and then come back to the space to eat lunch together and share our discoveries. Phoebe will then take a month to work the patterns up into a mural which she will then paint with the help of volunteers onto the entrance space as a form of adornment through collective memory and love for the place in which we live.

We are also asking / inviting participants to bring with you a pattern; i.e. a photograph, simple drawing or an object that houses a pattern of personal significance from your past. This could be anything from a pattern on the bottom of a cup, a train seat cover you see every morning, some lace from the edge of a curtain.

Schedule

9.45am – gather, drink tea, settle

10am – the history of decorative art and adornment, discussion of patterns brought by participants, methods of pattern collecting

10.45am – solo or paired walk around Penryn and the woods to gather patterns

12.30pm – a vegan lunch will be served

1pm – sharing patterns and discussion

2pm – close

What to bring

  • A water bottle
  • Weather-appropriate clothing and shoes
  • A sketchbook (loose paper and chalk/oil pastels/charcoal will be provided but you may wish to also bring your own materials)

Tickets

There are just 15 tickets available for this workshop, and they are all at a donation cost. All donations received will go towards buying materials for the project and contributing to Phoebe’s fee for the work. Phoebe’s fee has come from a generous donation of £500 made to The Convivial in June 2024, a nominal fee which does not fully cover her time and efforts on the project. We are therefore taking donations from attendees and anyone else who wishes to contribute to the project.

Suggested donation of £1-30.

Additional callout

If you are unable to make the workshop but wish to contribute to the project, you can do so via donation as above and/or contribute by sending in your own patterns to [email protected] with the email title ‘Patterns of Place’. These must be received by Saturday 14th March, 5pm for inclusion in the mural.

We are aiming to start painting the mural on Saturday 18th April after a design period of four weeks, and there will be volunteer opportunities to help paint, as well as an open evening once the mural is finished to celebrate our work. Please get in touch to find out more about this project.
