About this Event
Working with Pasadena's wild teachers, Ernest Batchelder understood that eucalyptus seed pods crack into star patterns, California live oak acorns nest in textured caps, and Anna's hummingbird throats flash ruby coin-sized patches. These patterns wait for hands working clay, paper, leather, and found materials to bring them into new forms.
When we trace nature's geometries into relief and surface design, we're encoding dreams—collective wishes about how the world could be more harmonious, more abundant, more alive than it currently is. Each repeated motif becomes what Ernst Bloch called "anticipatory consciousness," active projections of possibility that can reshape reality through the patient accumulation of ornamental work.
Batchelder's tiles functioned as soft utopias, gradually reshaping domestic spaces through dreams of perfect growth and eternal blooming. Working with local museums and heritage sites, we'll practice that same ornamental dreaming—turning observation into relief patterns that carry forward our own hopes for regenerative abundance and partnership between human culture and natural systems.
