Dive deep into the rich past of the Richardson Olmsted Campus on this two-hour guided tour of unoccupied buildings. Led by an expert docent, visitors will gain inside access to spaces untouched since the 1970s.
Learn what it was like to live at the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane. Go behind-the-scenes and back in time to learn about what life was like when the Richardson Olmsted Campus was home to thousands of people, including patients, doctors, nurses, attendants and staff.
Visitors will be immersed into the philosophies integrated into the Richardson by architect Henry Hobson Richardson, landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and mental health advocate Dr. Thomas Kirkbride.
During the tour, visitors will experience some of the site’s original structures as well as the healing landscape designed to serve as a therapeutic environment for patients.
Please wear close toed shoes.
COST: $40.00 (Payments non-refundable)
Only 16 spots available. *Photography not permitted. 16 and older.
Flat, sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. A mask or appropriate face covering must be worn on-site throughout the tour. For your safety, the Richardson Olmstead Complex reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone who is unable or unwilling to comply with these safety requirements.
This tour requires the ability to walk for the full duration as well as to climb several flights of stairs.
Tours are conducted rain or shine.

Take exit 11 for the NY-198 Scajaquada
Take the Grant Street exit toward Buffalo State College
Turn Right onto Grant St.
Turn left onto Bradley St.
Turn left to stay on Richardson Rd
Turn right onto Hotel Henry Way
Turn left to stay on Hotel Henry Way to Richardson Olmsted Complex 444 Forest ave (destination will be on the right)
