Welcome to the 4th annual Patient Care Experience Symposium/CE Week at Campus Health! Join us online or in person for five days filled with insightful discussions, engaging workshops, and networking opportunities. This event explores innovative strategies and best practices to ensure every student, patient, and client has a positive and welcoming experience with healthcare, as well as to improve care and promote learning among staff. Don't miss out on this chance to learn from industry leaders and connect with like-minded individuals passionate about creating a more supportive healthcare environment. Mark your calendars and get ready for a program full of inspiration and empowerment!


Credit information: The AAFP has reviewed 2026 Patient Care Experience Symposium/CE Week and deemed it acceptable for up to 14.25 Live AAFP Elective credit(s). Info: (1.5 APA CEs) This session is an interactive talk that will support participants in building skills to leverage AI effectively and ethically, with a particular focus on its application in integrated medical and behavioral healthcare settings that utilize electronic health records and other digital tools. It will cover opportunities for AI to improve patient care and efficiency in the workplace; tactical skills for using AI tools effectively to meet defined outcomes; and approaches for maintaining compliance with regulatory and ethical considerations for client care. This workshop is targeted for individuals providing or supporting access to medical and behavioral healthcare. Attendees do not need to have existing familiarity with AI tools prior to this session; an introduction to AI and relevant context will be provided.

It will also explore procedural opportunities to improve vaccine delivery within collegiate settings, aiming to bridge disparities in uptake. In addition, the session will present insights into young adults’ perspectives on HPV vaccine promotion, offering strategies to enhance communication and information dissemination. These findings will support efforts to increase HPV vaccine completion among this population.

Ethical Management of University Health Records
Host: Kathryn Krase, PhD, JD, MSW

Info: (3 APA CEs) Health professionals have a legal and ethical obligation to keep records to memorialize their work with their clients. However, what you record, and how it is recorded, can be confusing to navigate, especially in the university health setting. This workshop will explore the legal and ethical requirements of clinical record keeping, while highlighting ethical challenges and the realities of the practice in a university health setting where clients are primarily enrolled students. Attention will be paid to the ethical conflicts of satisfying legal requirements while simultaneously respecting the autonomy of clients. Hypothetical cases, including those concerning treatment of minor clients; balancing rapport and accurate documentation when assessing risk; and navigating conflicting diagnoses in the medical record will be used as a framework to guide the exploration of ethical obligations and relevant state laws as they impact record keeping and client confidentiality.

The Ethics of Autonomy: Navigating Influence, Capacity, and Care

Grounded in bioethics peer-reviewed literature, participants will engage in case discussion and reflective dialogue to examine how techniques intended to promote cooperation and adherence can both support and undermine patient agency. The session introduces practical strategies from shared decision-making models to strengthen communication and foster trust while maintaining professional responsibility. This session will also discuss limits to patient autonomy and the ethical significance of involuntary treatment in healthcare today, especially in the context of mental health services. By recognizing the subtle ways that power and persuasion shape care, participants will gain tools to promote ethical clarity and uphold autonomy in complex encounters.

An overview of the outcome measures used will be presented along with the outcomes of each model. The presentation will focus on the learning and associated best practices and the use of a tool to measure the level of care integration.

Workplace Violence and Healthcare: Establishing a Threat Assessment and Manage

Info: (1.75 APA CEs) It is well-established that disruptive behavior and workplace violence concerns are prominent in the uniquely challenging healthcare environment (mental and physical health). The session will cover specific reasons the healthcare environment is prone to risk. Additionally, fundamental principles of threat assessment and management will be presented along with real-world examples of how these concepts intersect with healthcare environments. Finally, the presentation will involve discussion of factors that should increase healthcare providers' level of concern about a patient to better understand situations in which referral to threat assessment professionals may be warranted, including identification of available campus resources.

Beyond the Scale: Eating Disorders and Weight-Neutral Care on Campus
Host: Lisa MacDonald, MPH, RDN

Info: (1.5 APA CEs) Eating disorders are a growing concern on college campuses, affecting students across all genders, races, and body sizes. This session provides information for medical professionals to differentiate between common eating disorder diagnoses including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, ARFID and OSFED and recognize unique campus-related risk factors such as academic stress, social pressures, and life transitions. We’ll examine the harm of weight-centric language and care, including its role in perpetuating stigma and delaying diagnosis. Participants will explore evidence-based, weight-neutral strategies that prioritize well-being, inclusive language, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This approach fosters more effective, compassionate care for a diverse student population.
