About this Event
What's a quilt block? A quilt block is a small, individual section of a quilt, typically square, that serves as a building block for the entire quilt. In this workshop, we will be crafting our own quilt block and sewing it onto an old garment to give it new life.
Who you are: Someone who knows machine sewing basics (how to thread a machine
and wind a bobbin, how to follow a seam allowance). You’ve been looking for a way to
use scraps or give a favorite garment new life, and maybe you’ve been wanting to try
your hand at quilting.
Class structure: Hands-on machine sewing class lead by sewist, Louise Sutton. During
this workshop, you’ll meet with up to 4 other stitchers for one, 3 hour class.
Course date: Saturday, February 22nd, 11am-2pm
Class curriculum: Learn quilt block sewing basics while choosing from one of five
designs, while learning about the history of the designs and quilting as a whole. We’ll be
using rotary cutters and mats, small seam allowances, and pressing techniques to
achieve a professional finish using your chosen fabrics and block design. Then, we’ll
sew your finished block onto a garment you bring!
Outcomes: Participants will bring new life into an old sweatshirt, jacket, or tee using their
handmade custom quilt block, while learning more about the history of the art of quilting.
What you need: If you have a sewing machine you'd like to use, please
bring it along with the pedal, presser foot, and needle. If you do not have a sewing
machine, no worries- We have machines available for use. Participants are encouraged
to bring their own machine to class to learn it's settings and functionality, but if you don't
have one and aren't ready to invest in one, we'd be happy to make one available to you
during class.
Participants need to bring:
● 1⁄4 yard of a few fabrics (3-4 different fabrics suggested) and/or fabric scraps for
making their quilt block
● A sweatshirt, tee shirt, or unlined jacket to upcycle using their quilt block
● A spool of All-purpose thread
If you have taken our Sewing 101 course, you will already have the necessary tool kit to
complete this project. If you have not taken a class with us, you will also need the following tools to make your quilt block. You can buy these supplies at checkout, just add on the Beginners Sewing Kit to your order or bring these materials if you already own them:
● Seam gauge
● Small pair of thread snips
● Seam ripper
● Pins
● Tailor's chalk or fabric pen/pencil
*No refund is given for any missed workshops or classes.
