The pasty came to the United States when Cornish miners immigrated to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the 1840s. The dish can be dated all the way back to 1150 in England. The pasty gained popularity with miners because it was easy to bring into the mines, and kept them full throughout the long workdays.
The braided crust of the handheld pasty allowed them to eat around the braid thus saving workers from consuming the arsenic dust on their hands.
Jen Berg, your instructor, is credited with making thousands of these yummy concoctions for various fundraisers in the greater Green Bay area. She shares her technique and recipe with students who will make and take 2 pasties.
Come join the fun!
