Past Forward : Heirloom Techniques with Martha Moore Porter

This class will be in person at Capital Fabric Supply at 63 Broadway in Kingston, NY

Date & Time : Sunday May 31st from 10 - 5pm, with break for lunch.

Cost : $160, Sewing machines provided.

Experience Level : Beginner / Advanced Beginner. Must have some experience and knowledge of how to use a home sewing machine.

Join Martha Moore Porter for a One-day workshop on heirloom sewing techniques. Learn to create tucks, lace insertion, and handmade trims using traditional methods, with an eye toward applying them to contemporary projects. Martha will demonstrate and explain each technique, and students will then use provided machines for swatch-making and material exploration. You will leave this workshop with swatches of each technique, as well as fresh ideas and the confidence to apply them to your projects at home. Heirloom techniques and fabric manipulation can be incorporated into garments, bags, and quilting projects.

Martha will provide 6 yards of mixed lace trim per student and a copy of her Heirloom Sewing zine, which includes brief written tutorials of the techniques taught in this workshop, tips, and black & white inspiration photos.

Students will need to bring their own fabric for swatching and practicing techniques. Smaller swatches work well and give you an opportunity to practice on different materials. Recommended fabrics are lightweight, crisp, stable wovens such as cotton lawn, poplin, voile, broadcloth, handkerchief linen, etc.

Cancellation Policy : It can be very difficult to fill a cancelled spot in such small groups though we understand life happens, people get sick, things with kids arise, etc. Please read this policy thoroughly before booking as we will not be able to make exceptions as a small, independently run business.

If you can, please provide at least 72 hours notice so that we can try to fill your spot. You will receive a gift card of the purchased amount that can be used towards future workshops or in store purchases.

If you can not provide 72 hours notice or you do not show up to the workshop, you will not be eligible for any store credit.

PARKING

Parking on Broadway is metered while parking off Broadway on side streets is free so we suggest the latter.
