Brass Queens is a female-led, New York-based brass band that has been dominating the brass band scene since 2019. Co-founders Alex Harris and Ally Chapel came together to form a group dedicated to showcasing the talents of female musicians in a landscape that was dominated by male musicians and bandleaders.
Their sound is deeply inspired by and pays homage to the New Orleans brass band tradition while injecting the upbeat, multifaceted energy of their New York home into each performance. The result is a nonstop party: a Brass Queens show will have you singing along to classic pop hits, dancing your heart out to reggaeton, and feeling like you've been transported to Frenchman Street.
In addition to playing at Thursdays Downtown, Brass Queens will also be playing for students at Rochester Public Schools' Summer SACC (School Age Child Care) program.
ABOUT PASSPORT SESSIONS
Presented annually since 2010, Passport Sessions is a free music series that celebrates global traditions, cultural connection, and community through live performance in downtown Rochester.
Each concert features world-influenced music — from folk and roots to contemporary cross-cultural blends — performed by artists deeply connected to the traditions they share. Events are family-friendly, un-ticketed, and open to all.
Past performances have included Irish bluegrass, Cajun fiddle, Latin percussion, and Tuvan throat singing.
