The morning of Saturday 29th March 2025 sees a partial solar eclipse of the Sun visible from the UK.
From Scarborough, at maximum eclipse, approximately 35-40% of the Sun will be obscured.
For members of the public interested in viewing the eclipse around Scarborough, the eclipse will be visible throughout the area.
In particular, anywhere along the foreshore or Esplanade area will afford good uninterrupted views.
SARAS members will be setting up specially filtered solar telescopes at the car park at Sea Cliff Road, Scarborough YO11 2XU, for observing the partial solar eclipse from 9am onwards and packing up by 1pm.
However this will be dependent on the weather, if the sky it totally clouded out, with zero chance of viewing any part of the eclipse, then SARAS will not be present.
The eclipse starts at just before 10:07am.
The eclipse maximum occurs at 11.03am.
The eclipse ends at just before 12:05pm
We will have a limited amount of solar viewing glasses available but not an exhaustive supply so we cannot 100% guarantee access to solar glasses at this event, however we will have a number of safely filtered solar telescopes available for the public to look through.
Solar Eclipse Glasses can be purchased seperately if desired from online Astronomy retailers such as First Light Optics, Harrison Telescopes, Rother Valley Optics etc, and online stores such as eBay and Amazon.
As this is a partial eclipse, it can be viewed throughout the 3 hour window, as there will be no brief period of totality when viewed from the UK, as with a total solar eclipse.
The Royal Observatory at Greenwich will also be Live Streaming the Eclipse: https://www.rmg.co.uk/whats-on/online/solar-eclipse-march-2025-uk-live-stream
Safety is absolutely vital for solar observing as this is an extremely dangerous activity if done incorrectly.
**NEVER LOOK AT THE SUN DIRECTLY WITHOUT PROPER SOLAR GLASSES OR OTHER APPROVED SOLAR VIEWING EQUIPMENT OR YOU WILL SUFFER PERMANENT EYE DAMAGE**
