A rare Partial Solar Eclipse will take place as the Sun (Te Rā) rises on the morning of Monday 22 September. Aotearoa New Zealand is one the few places it will be visible. The last one we had was back in November 2012. At maximum, which takes place just after 7:00 am, 66% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon.To make the most of this opportunity the Wellington Astronomical Society Outreach team will be at the Wellington waterfront with our solar scopes. Solar eclipse glasses will be available to purchase for $2 each. Please bring coins/cash.
Please DO NOT look at the Sun directly or even with sunglasses. You will damage your eyes. If you don't have access to solar glasses, use a pinhole projector or look at the shadows of leaves on the ground.
If you want to support our Society by becoming a member, please go to https://www.was.org.nz/join-us/
