Thanks to the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA), through Recreation District #1, the Pelican Park Nature Club is hosting a Mothsheeting BioBlitz on September 6th at 7:00PM in support of Parks for Pollinators campaign. What is a moth sheet? A moth sheet is a simple setup used to observe moths and other nocturnal insects. It involves hanging a white sheet and shining a bright light on it, which attracts the insects, providing a surface for them to land on and be studied. We will get an up close and personal view of some of Louisiana’s most magnificent insects!
What a BioBlitz? The Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz is an event where community members work with park staff to create a snapshot of the variety of wildlife that can be found in Northlake Nature Center on September 6th. We use a no-cost platform/app called iNaturalist to take pictures of plants, insects, and animals to see what wildlife is present in the park on this day and provide us with more information about pollinators, which are essential to our ecosystem.
This information will help us understand how we can better protect pollinators and other important wildlife in our community.
We recommend downloading iNaturalist to you device before attending this event so volunteers can help you learn how to use the app. The Parks for Pollinators campaign takes place for the whole month of September, so you can return on your own time and log observations once the BioBlitz is over!
