In a compact city, there's never enough parking.

The parking that does exist is under threat of being developed, bringing more people into an already crowded space. Surface parking lots turn into housing. Street parking turns into bike lanes. Demand goes up and supply dwindles.

This stress creates some antagonism in conversations around infrastructure for cars, biking, sidewalks and transit. In the zero-sum game, paving the way for car-free alternatives comes at the expense of driver convenience.

But this antagonism is missing a key point: for every car-free traveler, there's one fewer car taking up a parking space.

Each time you see a cyclist, transit rider or pedestrian, that means there's one open parking spot somewhere waiting for you.

They've saved you a spot.

Our Park(ing) Day demonstration will publicly celebrate the ways that car-free travelers save a parking spot for everyone, including drivers, local businesses and city planners.
