Paris Is Burning
1990 | 76 min. | Color | DCP
Directed by: Jennie Livingston
Cast: Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, Octavia St. Laurent, Venus Xtravaganza, Anji Xtravaganza, Freddie Pendavis, and Junior LaBeija
This landmark documentary provides a vibrant snapshot of the 1980s through the eyes of New York City’s Black and Latinx Harlem drag ball scene. Made over seven years, Paris Is Burning offers an intimate portrait of rival fashion “houses,” from fierce contests for trophies, to house mothers offering sustenance in a world rampant with homophobia and transphobia, racism, AIDS, and poverty. Featuring legendary voguers, drag queens, and trans women—including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, and Venus Xtravaganza—Paris Is Burning brings it, celebrating the joy of movement, the force of eloquence, and the draw of community.

KOKOMO CITY
2023 | 73 min. | B&W | DCP
Directed by: D. Smith
Cast: Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell and Dominique Silver
In the wildly entertaining and refreshingly unfiltered documentary, filmmaker D. Smith passes the mic to four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York City – Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell, and Dominique Silver – who unapologetically break down the walls of their profession. Holding nothing back, the film vibrates with energy, sex, challenge, and hard-earned wisdom. This vital portrait, edited and shot by Smith in bold black and white, is her feature directorial debut, and it won the Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award as well as the Berlinale’s Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary section.
