This workshop, hosted by Black South West Network and led by Jasmine Tippett, focuses on strengthening parents’ ability to advocate for their children while prioritising their own wellbeing and capacity.

Many parents navigate the education system without a full understanding of their rights, often relying on instinct while facing complex, inaccessible processes. This session starts from the basics, centring parents’ rights, lived experiences, and the importance of capacity when engaging with schools.
Recognising that parents of Black and Racially Minoritised children are often left feeling unheard, this workshop takes a holistic approach. It combines practical advocacy tools with a focus on self-care, community connection, and long-term engagement with schools.
This is part of a 3-part series focused on supporting parents of Black and Racially Minoritised students:
Workshop 1: On Rights and Navigating Systems with Margaret Simmons-Bird MBE (17th June 2026, 13.00 to 15.00 at the St Paul’s Learning Centre)
Workshop 2: On Safeguarding Policies and Complaints with Domini Choudhury (23rd September 2026, 13.00 to 15.00 at the St Paul’s Learning Centre)
Workshop 3: On Parent Self-Advocacy, Care, and Parent-School Engagement with Jasmine Tippett (18th of November 2026, 13.00 to 15.00 at the St Paul’s Learning Centre)

The workshop begins at 1.00 pm until 2.30 pm, with questions to Jasmine Tippett until 3.00 pm.

Who is this event for?

• Parents and carers of Black and racially minoritised children
• Those who feel unsure about their rights or how to advocate
• Parents seeking support, confidence, and community
• Families who want to engage more meaningfully with schools
• Parents who have felt unheard, overwhelmed, or isolated

What will be covered?

This session focuses on both advocacy skills and parent wellbeing, including:

Understanding your rights as a parent and where they come from (including key legislation such as the Equality Act and safeguarding guidance)

• Building confidence in your own judgement, even when systems feel unclear
• How to navigate the education system and know where to seek support
• Practical approaches to advocacy and getting help when needed
• The importance of parent capacity, self-care, and sustaining engagement
• Developing strong, constructive relationships with schools
• Opportunities for deeper engagement and becoming involved in school governance

This session recognises that effective advocacy is not just about knowledge, but also about confidence, support, and community.

What to expect

• Interactive workshop (in-person preferred, with potential recording)
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours
• Venue: Community setting (e.g. St Paul’s Learning Centre)
• Accessibility: Creche provision planned to support participation. The session prioritises interaction, shared learning, and community-building, recognising that connection and support are key to parent wellbeing and advocacy.

• Creche provision planned to support participation
• There is/are 2 Blue Badge parking bay(s) within the car park
• The St Paul's Learning Centre is wheelchair accessible with step-free access, accessible bathrooms, and a lift.
• Parking is free for all users. The car park is located at the side and rear of the venue. Parking spaces for Blue Badge holders cannot be booked in advance. There is/are 2 Blue Badge parking bay(s) within the car park.
