Parenting in the Age of Comparison, a Beyond Body Talk > Panel Series
About this Event
Social/peer pressures have never been more complicated. Children today are growing up with incredibly unique opportunities to learn, experiment and grow. At the same time, there’s no denying that barriers will always exist. For some, more than others.
Add the pressures of constant comparison that begin before puberty and amplify in early adolescence, from how kids behave at home vs. school, where appearance-based shaming has been reported to begin by age 11; where others may compare what’s on their plate or in their lunchbox; or compare their athleticism from the playground to playing fields/rinks/tracks/dance studios (and the list goes on).
How much of this actually impacts their academic focus while learning to develop social self-confidence? (And all of this might be before they've ever been granted access to smartphones, social media or AI-driven search tools.) When it comes to food, feelings and body talk, certain childhood behaviours might make a parent question, “Is this normal?”.
Parenting has never been more complicated. Yet 1 in 4 adolescents (8-25) have an eating disorder in Canada, and we rarely hear about them - until it's too late. 75% of eating disorders begin in childhood, shamefully and in secret. Up to 15% can be deadly if not caught early or caught on time at all, especially for 15-24 year old girls. And it's not getting better, for anyone.
Learn how to help your child avoid disordered eating or a potential eating disorder. Join these courageous and experienced voices for an intimate evening of honest conversation.
Together, we will explore what families can do sooner, before concerns become crises. You'll leave with greater insights on how eating disorders could begin, the confidence to start conversations that can protect your child's mental health, and a better understanding of how to start difficult conversations sooner.
