Come discover the vibrant world of pollination at the CEC teaching gardens!
About this Event

In this workshop for children age 3-7, participants will explore the CEC gardens to meet all sorts of pollinators, and learn about their special relationships with flowers. We'll learn what makes different pollinators tick, and share ways to support them in our neighbourhoods! This workshop will be approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour in length.

Tickets are $15 for the first adult + child duo, and $5 for each additional adult or child. If these ticket prices are a barrier, please contact the CEC; no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Instructor bios:

As Education Manager at the Compost Education Centre, Elora (she/they) delivers workshops, tours and lessons to children year round. Elora has 10 years of experience working with children and has a background in environmental education. She found a love for teaching children about ecology during many years spent at summer camps and working in youth outdoor education. Elora aims to deliver interactive and accessible workshops and is excited to be able to offer parent-child workshops this summer. When she is not teaching you can find her working on her plant ID skills, doodling, swimming or taking care of her house plants.

Jeffrey (he/him) has been teaching with the CEC since 2021, and is the Child & Youth Education Coordinator. He greatly enjoys his role as an educator, and regularly bikes around the city delivering workshops at schools and daycares. He's had a passion for biological sciences since childhood, and is also a gardener. One of his favourite hobbies is taking pictures of microbes under the microscope. You'll often find him taking care of the CEC's composting worms.

Accessibility info: this workshop will be happening outdoors, with floor mats and chairs provided. In the event of rain we may move into the strawbale classroom, in which case we politely request that participants wear masks. There is no additional cost for bringing children under 3 years of age, though the material will be tailored to the 3-7 age range.

The Compost Education Centre is located on unceded and occupied Indigenous territories, specifically the land of the Lekwungen speaking people—the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. These nations are two of many, made up of individuals who have lived within the porous boundaries of what is considered Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwa'wakw Territory (Vancouver Island) since time immemorial. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities.

Compost Education Centre memberships get you free workshops, discounts at garden centres around town and more great perks! Sign up or learn more on our website.
