About this Event
From prolonged drought to flash floods, what are the particularities and paradoxes surrounding water in the American Southwest? Who has rights to water? How is water shared among people, plants, and other animals? How do we reconcile diverse cultural and spiritual views of water?
Join the Natural History Institute for an in-person screening of the Parched documentary with comments by curator Julie Comnick and the producer Jane Marks. The Parched documentary tells the story of the creation of the art exhibit- Parched: The Art of Water in the Southwest - which explores the complexities of water in the context of climate change and increasing demands on water. Nine regional artists participated in a comprehensive education program led by scientists, managers, and environmental advocates and spent a year creating original art pieces that are unified into one exhibit. Parched reflects the conflicting demands on water for agriculture, recreation, households, and nature.
Doors open at 6:30 pm.
*The event is free but space is limited to 30 vaccinated participants and registration is required to attend. Masks and physical distancing required. The talk will be live-streamed to our YouTube channel for those not able to attend in person.
This exhibition is produced by Creative Flagstaff in partnership with Coconino Plateau Watershed Partnership, NAU Center for Ecosystem Science and Society, Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter. Parched: The Art of Water in the Southwest was made possible through grants by the National Endowment for the Arts, National Science Foundation, and Arizona Humanities.
