Master anime filmmaker Satoshi Kon had so many unused unique ideas from his features Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, and Tokyo Godfathers that he put them all in his brilliant, eclectic, unsettling, visionary, wildly creative 2004 TV series Paranoia Agent.

Running 13 episodes (each episode 25 minutes), Paranoia Agent, much like Twin Peaks, focuses on an unsettling central act of violence that blossoms out to be a kaleidoscopic look at an ensemble of fascinating characters where our initial understanding of the violent acts changes, deepens & becomes more and more mysterious.

A city is terrorized by Lil Slugger (Bat Boy in the literal Japanese translation), a mysterious assailant who victims can only remember wields a gold baseball bat.

In episodes #1-7, we are introduced to various characters including the police detectives assigned to the case. Each episode ends with a Lil Slugger attack as we come to understand how bullying, insecurity and personal conflict affect each of L’il Sluggers victims (and some admirers).

Then, we get an explanation for the attacks but the explanation is more mysterious then what we thought it would be. New details come to light revealing that some of the victims may have only imagined the attacks and new characters appear who inject even more dread and uncertainty into everyone’s lives than L’il Slugger (who keeps attacking).

Episodes #8-13 hurtle towards an almost apocalyptic conclusion as Satoshi Kon fully digs into examining his ongoing themes of the blurred line between reality and fantasy, waking life and dream, interior and external realities. It would be impossible to give a synopsis here without ruining the jaw-dropping mind melting twists and turns the series takes.

What we can tell you is that we’re wildly excited to be able to present one of Satoshi Kon’s masterworks, little seen as a cinematic event, all on one day.

Kon is one of the those rare cinematic voices who is able to make works that are simultaneously humane, psychologically complex, and mysterious, cinematically arresting & totally unique.

Join us for one of the greatest anime series ever made.

Best always,

Craig Hammill
