About this Event

RAVERS AND REVELERS
LET THE BASS & BREAKS TRANSPORT YOU

Welcome to Paradox: THE ESSENCE OF EARLY RAVE

The year is 1993. Picture yourself pulsating in the energy of a mid-Atlantic warehouse, sweat glistening under dim lights, surrounded by a throng of fellow ravers. The internet was in its infancy and the DJs held an aura of mystique, mixing tracks that induced euphoria. You danced near the speakers, craving to feel every thump of the bass reverberate through your body.

Fast forward to 2024, and here we are. Whether you experienced the early rave scene firsthand or not, its spirit endures, evolves, and flourishes at PARADOX.

Our intention for Paradox simple yet profound: we invite DJs to reimagine the essence of early rave, drawing from memory or fantasy. From the frenetic beats of jungle and drum n' bass to the infectious rhythms of house, trance, breakbeats, and hardcore, we embark on a journey along the fringes of electronic nostalgia.

:::::WILL MILES:::::

Will Miles is a classically trained producer/DJ from the U.S. who currently resides in Perth. The diversity in his production style is due to the vast musical influences he's been exposed to over the years. Miles acquired his love of Drum n' Bass from his friend Kjell Anderson (who is half of their production duo Style Control) back in 1994. This quickly led Miles into DJing the following year, and into Drum n' Bass produciton in 1998. He would then sign 10 tracks with Thermal Recordings in 2001. He also joined the production team NUCO and held a residency for three years called Information Technology. In that same period of time he was resident at Europa, in downtown Richmond. :::::PLAYPLAY::::

NYC-based DJ PlayPlay combines their penchant for percussion and bass with nostalgic samples & dreamy synths in both their DJ sets & music production. Their sound and encyclopedic sets are inspired by over 20 years of clubbing, crate digging and the sounds they grew up dancing to - 90s club anthems, jungle, breakbeat hardcore, industrial, classic house, techno and old school hip-hop. With releases out on several labels as well as a slew of self-releases and collaborations, PlayPlay has been slowly and steadily amassing a thumping discography over the past decade. Their most recent EP out on Brooklyn-based Sorry Records has been described as “euphoric and joyous” (Untitled 909) and as three “springing, two step-inspired club tracks” (DJ Mag). PlayPlay has several more solo and collaborative releases planned throughout 2023.

Originally from Durham, PlayPlay remains part of the Party Illegal collective and is the creator of the long-running “Dreaming of the 90s” party at The Pinhook. Over the years, PlayPlay has had the privilege of playing alongside artists such as Big Freedia, TT the Artist, Suzi Analogue, Le1f, Sudan Archives, Sylvan Esso, MikeQ, UNIIQU3, Nadus, Jubilee and even...Darude. At the core, PlayPlay is a lifelong raver who loves to get lost in good music both on the dancefloor and behind the decks.

:::::FIFI HI-FI:::::

Fifi Hi-Fi aka Fifi aka Sarah Honer is a DJ based in Durham, NC. She’s been mixing vinyl since the early 2000s. Her turntablism style is grounded by time spent as a dancer/choreographer for the stage as well as her time spent as a dancer on the floor at the club.

Hailing from the 90s rave and goth scene in Washington, DC, Fifi has been dancing til dawn since the late 20th century. She has an innate sense of *what moves people.* Her sets are pop-heavy and dance-driven. She’s happiest making seamless transitions on vinyl as the most satisfying visceral djing experience and has also leaned into digital tech as a fun way to carry around less vinyl. Thanks to 90s rave culture, Fifi has an affinity for big beats, deep bass, and the art of mixing and performing: she loves creating an atmosphere for the crowd to let loose and find some somatic/ecstatic peace.

Find her at her monthly residencies with Mike D at Rubies on Five Points: Shallow Cuts & Adulting. Her past parties include Prance, Dark Entries, Perfect Kiss, and many other pop-ups at Ringside, The Pinhook, Bowbarr, OCSC, and Motorco.
