Komponist og kunstner Karen Juhl giver sit bud i PARADE, en korperformance, der kan opleves i Glyptotekets antikke samling den 27. og 29. april.
Gennem flerstemmige kompositioner og koreografi går værket i dialog med den antikke samling og iscenesætter koret som en moderne fortolkning af antikkens græske kor. Værkidéen opstod oprindeligt i forbindelse med et arbejdsophold på Det Danske Institut i Athen:
”Jeg tog dertil med oldtidskundskabsbrillerne på, med blik for vestens vugge, myter og skønhed, men fik mest øje på sporene efter økonomisk krise, flygtningekrise og klimakrise,” siger Karen Juhl. Det ville jeg gerne bringe med ind i værket: uoverensstemmelserne, flere fortællinger der eksisterer samtidigt. Flerstemmigheden fik en anden klang.”
Teksten i PARADE består af en række apokalyptiske billeder af overbevoksede torv, sammenfiltrede flyforbindelser, skyer og digitale filer. Sangerne synger og fortolker fælles fraser indenfor aftalte spilleregler. Men hierarkiet er fladt. Det giver en kormusik, der balancerer på grænsen mellem solosang og samklang og som løbende udvikler sig.
Ligesom antikkens kor på scenen blev brugt til at spejle hverdagslivet i kunsten, bruger Juhl koret til at skabe nye forbindelser mellem fortidens og nutidens ansigter.
PARADE er nykomponeret særligt til Glyptoteket og kan opleves som pop up-opførelser i museets antikke samling torsdag den 27. april fra kl. 17-21 og lørdag den 29. april fra kl. 11-15.
OM KAREN JUHL
Karen Juhl er komponist og kunstner og har med få udgivelser markeret sig som en væsentlig stemme i dansk musikliv. Hendes EP og mixed media-værk Endless er kaldt ”et fantastisk eksempel på eksperimenterende pop, der rører lytteren og samtidig formår at udvide grænserne for det, vi kalder musik i dag”.
Karen Juhls arbejde er ofte flydende mellem kunstformerne, men forener det helt kropsligt nære med globale begivenheder. Værkerne udspringer af lige dele kærlighed til eksperimenterende komposition og popmusik. PARADE er en del af en værkserie, der også indbefatter Karen Juhls debutalbum samt en tilhørende kunstbog.

PARADE – A choral performance by Karen Juhl

What does a meeting between ancient choirs and modern compositional music sound like?
Composer and artist Karen Juhl gives her bid in PARADE, a choral performance that can be experienced in the antique collection of the Glyptotek on 27 and 29 April.
Through polyphonic compositions and choreography, the work engages in dialogue with the ancient collection and stages the choir as a modern interpretation of the ancient Greek choir.
The project idea originally arose in connection with a work stay at the Danish Institute in Athens:
"I went there to gather knowledge of ancient Greece, with an eye for the cradle of the West, myths and beauty, but I mostly saw the traces of economic crisis, refugee crisis and climate crisis," says Karen Juhl. I wanted to bring that into the work: the inconsistencies, multiple narratives that exist simultaneously. The plurality took on a different tone.”
The text in PARADE consists of a series of apocalyptic images of overgrown squares, tangled airplane connections, clouds and digital files. The choir sings and interprets common phrases within agreed rules. But the hierarchy is flat. This results in choral music that balances on the border between solo singing and harmony, and continuously develops.
Just as the ancient choir on stage was used to mirror everyday life in art, Juhl uses the choir to create new connections between the faces of the past and the present.
PARADE has been newly composed especially for the Glyptoteket and can be experienced as pop-up performances in the museum's antique collection on Thursday 27 April from 5-9 pm and Saturday 29 April from 11 am - 3 pm.
ABOUT KAREN JUHL
Karen Juhl is a composer and artist who with a few releases has distinguished herself as an important voice in the Danish music scene. Her EP and mixed media work Endless has been called "a fantastic example of experimental pop that touches the listener and at the same time manages to expand the boundaries of what we call music today".
Karen Juhl's work is often fluid between the art forms, and unites the physical body with global events. The works stem from equal love for both experimental composition and pop music. PARADE is part of a series of works that also includes Karen Juhl's debut album and an accompanying art book.
