Local artist Julia Goodman shares a step-by-step process to make unique pieces of handmade paper. Participants learn to use deckle boxes, colored recycled paper, kitchen blenders, and water to make their own paper. We discuss paper weight, fiber quality, and color mixing. This workshop is open to students of all ages and experience levels.
Julia Goodman makes work at the intersection of papermaking, textiles, sculpture, and painting. She transforms bedsheets and T-shirts—fabrics that lie close to bodies day and night—into large and small wall works and suspended sculptures with vibrating colors, expanding orbits, abstracted forms, decisive edges, loose spills, torn fabrics, dirt, brick flecks, and layers of watercolor. Her work is in the permanent collections of the National Museum of Women in the Arts and DePaul Art Museum. Her residencies include JB Blunk Residency, Recology SF, and Creativity Explored. Goodman lives in Berkeley and is currently teaching Introduction to Papermaking: From Fiber to Paper at California College of the Arts
Space is limited; RSVP required
