A conversation with regional experts on the recent German Elections.
About this Event

German voters decide this Sunday, February 23, who will run their next government, and this election has important consequences for the future of the Bundestag. We are bringing together experts from the field to explore the implications of these elections at a time when EU-U.S. relations are increasingly important on the world stage.

At this event, we will hear from Johanna Roth, U.S. Correspondant for Zeit Online, Majid Sattar, Washington Correspondant for the Frankfurter Allemeine, and Rachel Rizzo, nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council's Europe Center.

Roth is an alumna of Deutsche Journalistenschule (DJS) in Munich. She has reported on U.S. elections and social issues in the Southern U.S. as well as European politics. Sattar studied political science and history in Saarbrücken and Freiburg. He is now an expert reporter on U.S. politics. Rachel Rizzo researches European security and NATO, earning her MA in security policy studies from the George Washington University.

We look forward to this enriching discussion. The event will begin at 12:30pm in McGhee Library in the Intercultural Center (ICC) on the Hilltop Campus of Georgetown University. Please note in your registration if you will attend in-person or virtually. Lunch and refreshments will be provided!

Rachel Rizzo is a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Europe Center. Her research focuses on European security, NATO, and the transatlantic relationship. Prior to joining the Atlantic Council, Rizzo served as the director of programs at the Truman Center for National Policy and the Truman National Security Project, where she managed a team of senior fellows and oversaw all Truman-branded publications, programming, and policy initiatives. From 2019-2020, she spent a year as a Robert Bosch fellow in Berlin, Germany, where she worked at the Berlin office of Human Rights Watch leading a research project on the EU’s dual-use surveillance-technology export policy and serving as an advisor to a member of the German Bundestag.

Majid Sattar is the Washington Correspondent of the German National Daily FAZ. Before moving to the US in 2018 he was posted in Berlin, mostly covering German foreign policy and the Social Democratic Party. He has been with the Frankfurter Allgemeine since 2000. Sattar studied Political Science and Modern and Economic History in Saarbruecken and Freiburg and holds a PhD in Political Science. His thesis covered Informal Congressional Oversight of the Executive Branch in the US.

Johanna Roth is the US correspondent for ZEIT ONLINE, based in Washington, DC. Previously, she worked in ZEIT ONLINE's Berlin newsroom, writing and editing features and commentary with a particular focus on European politics. In 2020, she was a freelance reporter covering elections and social issues in the Southern United States. Before that, she worked as an opinion editor at taz, die tageszeitung in Berlin, Germany. Johanna is an alumna of Deutsche Journalistenschule (DJS) in Munich. She holds a MA in Comparative Literature from Freie Universität Berlin and a BA in German, Islamic Studies, and Political Science from Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg.
