Women play a major role in Australia’s film industry, both at home and internationally. While the spotlight often shines on Australian female stars and directors, this panel specifically celebrates women in key, behind-the-scenes roles: cinematography, screenwriting, editing, music composition and more.
Join us for a thought-provoking conversation with industry leaders to celebrate the wins and explore the challenges and opportunities faced by Australian women in film.
PANELLISTS:
Dr Nell Greenwood is the CEO of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and an academic leader, screenwriter and creativity advocate with more than 25 years’ experience in screen education and international film and television production. She is passionate about increasing female representation and diversity within the screen and broadcast industry and forging deeper interdisciplinary connections across industries in Australia and abroad.
Dr Greenwood’s career started in content development, and she has held several senior industry roles including Head of Development at the Irish Film Board, Head of Development at Natural Nylon Entertainment (home to Jude Law and Ewan McGregor), and Head of Development at Element Films (producers of The Lobster and The Favourite). Her screenwriting credits include AFI winner False Witness for UKTV (Foxtel) and Pride and Joy, the latter nominated for Best TV Film at the 46th Monte Carlo TV Film Festival.
Bryony Marks is an award-winning Australian composer who brings classical rigour and an insider’s perspective to her music. Her film composing credits include Noise (2007), Berlin Syndrome (2017), 2040 (2019) and Just a Farmer (2024). Marks’ film and television scores have garnered numerous accolades and nominations from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA), the Film Critics Circle of Australia, the Australian Film Institute and at the APRA Screen Music Awards.
Beyond film and TV, other recent projects include a collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra on children's theatrical production The Princess, the Pea (and the Brave Escapee), which had its premiere in September 2023. Marks has also collaborated with choreographer Alice Topp on two productions, Patina and Annealing, which both premiered in 2022.
Anousha Zarkesh is an AACTA and Casting Guild Award winner and has been a Casting Director for over 25 years, specialising in Australian television and film for a wide range of genres including political satire, drama, comedy, telemovies, documentary series and film. Productions include Shayda, The New Boy, The Stranger, Swift Street, Firebite, Total Control series, Rake, High Ground, Mystery Road series, Sweet Country, Black Comedy, Operation Buffalo, Hounds of Love, Deep Water, Cleverman, The Principal, Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door, Redfern Now, Suburban Mayhem, Beautiful Kate, Underbelly series, Mabo, Mary Bryant and Jasper Jones, to name a few.
Anousha is currently Vice President of the Casting Guild of Australia and an active member of its Diversity and Inclusion Committee. She is also Vice President of Screen Illawarra.

Dr Holly Trueman is the CEO of Screen Canberra and has been working in the film and television industry in the UK and Australia for over 20 years. Dr Trueman previously served as Head of Production and Executive Producer at Wildbear Entertainment, where she managed people as well as film and television projects across multiple offices in Australia and New Zealand. Her TV producing credits include Ride: A brutal fairy-tale (Adelaide Film Festival, Boulder Film Festival and ABC), Animal Bushfire Rescue (PBS Nature, ARTE), Human Animal (ARTE, ZDF), Great Australian Stuff with Tony Armstrong (ABC), Reefshot (STAN Original), Australia after War (ABC) and Building to the Sky (Discovery Science, Red Arrow).
