Shamanism is a critically acclaimed free jazz ensemble blending contemporary improvisation with elements of Korean shamanistic ritual. Led by South Korean saxophonist and improviser Jung-Jae Kim, the group creates immersive performances that merge cultural storytelling with boundary-pushing sonic exploration and evocative visual narratives.
The visual component, created by Jung-Jae Kim, portrays a ritualistic journey through moving imagery that mirror the fluidity and elasticity of water. These visuals are intricately tied to the music, responding to, and amplifying the ensemble’s sonic textures, rhythms, and improvisational energy, creating a unified, multi-sensory experience.
Through the elemental voices of percussion and winds, Shamanism forms a raw, primal soundscape. At its core, the project explores indigenous spirit and collective cultural memory, expressed through the timeless languages of rhythm, breath, and visual narrative—offering a profound, visceral experience that transcends borders and speaks to universal human connection.

Shamanism ist ein von der Kritik gefeiertes Free-Jazz-Ensemble, das zeitgenössische Improvisation mit Elementen koreanischer schamanistischer Rituale verbindet. Unter der Leitung des südkoreanischen Saxophonisten und Improvisators Jung-Jae Kim schafft die Gruppe immersive Performances, die kulturelles Storytelling mit klanglicher Grenzüberschreitung und eindrucksvollen visuellen Narrativen verbinden.
Die visuelle Komponente, ebenfalls von Jung-Jae Kim entwickelt, zeigt eine rituelle Reise durch bewegte Bilder, die die Fluidität und Elastizität von Wasser widerspiegeln. Diese Visuals sind eng mit der Musik verwoben: Sie reagieren auf die klanglichen Texturen, Rhythmen und die improvisatorische Energie des Ensembles und verstärken sie, wodurch ein einheitliches, multisensorisches Erlebnis entsteht.
Durch die elementaren Stimmen von Schlagzeug und Blasinstrumenten erschafft Shamanism eine rohe, ursprüngliche Klanglandschaft.
