Meet the two Palestinian writers, Mazen Maarouf and Maya Abu Alhayyat, who are travelling to Denmark from Reykjavik and Jerusalem. The two authors will present their writing, literary activities, and thoughts on Palestinian literature today. After the presentations, and a Q&A session, we serve wine and snacks.
Mazen Maarouf (b.1978) is a Palestinian writer, translator, and journalist. He grew up in Lebanon and has been living in Iceland since 2011. He has written poems and short stories and the short story collection Jokes for the Gunmen was published in Danish in 2019 (Vittigheder til Krigerne). Mazen's stories often take place in the context of war and move on the edge of the absurd in his exploration of what war does to people and society. His upbringing as a Palestinian migrant in Beirut during the Lebanese civil war has left its mark on his outlook on life, and he is today an important voice in the Palestinian diaspora.
Maya Abu Alhayyat was born in Beirut (1980). She grew up in Jordan, lives in Jerusalem, and works in Ramallah, Palestine. She has published two poetry collections, several children books, and three novels and edited The Book of Ramallah (2021). Since 2013 she has been the director of the Palestine Writing Workshop, an institution that seeks to encourage reading in Palestinian communities through creative writing projects and storytelling. A collection of Maya’s poems which depict a woman’s everyday life and reflections under occupation have been translated into Danish and published in the magazine Vi er mange (2022).
The presentations will be in English.
The event is funded by the Danish Institute in Damascus and ToRS.
