A Night in Collaboration with Enchanted Lion Books
Part of the Southern Hemisphere Series
Southern Hemisphere Series and proudly present a special night at Sur NYC with Paloma Valdivia, an award-winning Chilean illustrator and author. Join us for an inspiring conversation about storytelling, illustration, and the creative journey of one of Latin America's most celebrated children's book illustrators.
Following an insightful talk with Decur, this new installment of the series will feature Paloma Valdivia, a visionary artist whose books explore universal themes of belonging, life cycles, and human connection. Paloma’s work has been published in over 15 languages and has garnered numerous international accolades, including a nomination for the 2024 Hans Christian Andersen Award. She is also the co-founder of Ediciones Liebre, a publishing house dedicated to innovative and poetic books for early childhood.
The evening will highlight Paloma’s collaboration with on Book of Questions, an illustrated edition of Pablo Neruda’s final work, which invites readers to embrace curiosity and the mysteries of life. Paloma will share her creative journey and insights into her creative process, the power of visual storytelling, and the delicate task of visually interpreting the unanswerable.
This event is perfect for those passionate about illustration, picture books, literature, and the intersection of words and images in shaping narratives for young audiences. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session, and signed copies of Book of Questions will be available for purchase.

Sur NYC is a creative space shared by illustrator Eugenia Mello and design studio Bardo Industries. Located in the vibrant neighborhood of Gowanus in Brooklyn, NY, our space serves as a hub for creativity and artistic expression.
About Paloma Valdivia
Paloma Valdivia is a Chilean illustrator, author, and educator, celebrated for her lyrical and conceptual storytelling. A graduate of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, she furthered her studies in Barcelona, where she collaborated with renowned illustrators before developing her distinct visual language.
With a career spanning over 20 years, Paloma’s books—including Up Above and Down Below, Es Así, Nosotros, and Book of Questions—are recognized for their emotional depth, elegant compositions, and universal themes. Her work has received numerous international awards, and she continues to push the boundaries of children's literature with innovative narratives.
In addition to her career as an illustrator, Paloma is the co-founder of Ediciones Liebre, a Chilean publishing house that explores playful and poetic approaches to books for early childhood.
About Enchanted Lion Books
Enchanted Lion Books is an independent publisher based in Brooklyn, NY. We opened our doors and published our first list in the spring of 2003. We love books, well-told stories, and illustrations that open up the visual world and deepen a child's sense of story.
