ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: Ever since meeting as presenters at the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design in 1992, Sven Kirsten and Peter Moruzzi have continued researching and documenting 20th-century urban design and popular culture. Each went on their own path publishing several books about their chosen subjects, but also collaborating on two book projects that brought them as far as New York and Havana. It's only fitting then that the two authors reunite in the new book “PALM SPRINGS TIKI: POLYNESIA IN THE DESERT,” which brings together Sven’s pet subject of Tiki style with Peter’s expertise in Palm Springs architecture and history. Through a myriad of captivating objects, historic photographs, vintage postcards, colorful architectural renderings, and other ephemera, Sven will illustrate the many imaginative concepts that proprietors developed in creating a tropical paradise in the California desert. Afterward, both authors will sign their most recent collaboration.ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Sven Kirsten studied cinematography at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles and fell in love with the aesthetic extremes of LA. While lighting and shooting music videos and features with Tom Waits, Sergio Mendes or Robert De Niro, he began to pursue his hobby of urban archeology and photographed and collected the remnants of the vanishing Tiki cult in America. His Book of Tiki sought to represent the visual seductiveness of this unique, never-before-recognized facet of American pop culture. When not shooting cable TV movies in Europe, Sven lives with his son, Diego, in his hilltop home overlooking the Silverlake reservoir.
Historian and author Peter Moruzzi is a longtime preservationist with a passion for mid-century Modern architecture and design. Born in Massachusetts and raised in Hawaii, Moruzzi graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and later attended the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. In 1999, he was founding president of the Palm Springs Modern Committee. He has authored six pictorial history books published by Gibbs Smith covering Havana, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.
