Palm Leaf Basket Weaving Skillshare
The palm leaf basket weaving workshop event is scheduled! Want to learn to make palm leaf baskets like this? We're excited to announce that Jolie from Wild Craft Weaving in South Carolina will be in Gainesville to teach an Earth Living Skillshare workshop using our native sabal palm to craft beautiful, functional items.
The skillshare will be Sunday, July 12, 10am-1pm at Greentree Park, 3600 NW 19th St, Gainesville FL. Because it's July, we've scheduled this for the morning, before the hottest part of the day. We'll be under a shade canopy and we'll have fans and water available (please bring your own drinking vessel), and if all goes well we'll have ice packs available.
This event is free to attend, but donations are highly encouraged. Jolie has worked years developing her skills and is traveling a long way to teach us. We're trying out the viability of donation-supported skillshare events that are economically inclusive to all. So if you have the financial means, please consider making a donation to Jolie to help cover her costs and to make free skillshare events like this possible.
Palm leaves are renewable, compostable, and available in unlimited supply around here - exactly the kind of stuff we should be using to supply our material needs. Much of the info out there about palm weaving uses leaves of coconut palm, which doesn't grow up here in North Florida. But the native sabal palm is here in great abundance. Leaf structure of sabal palm is a bit different from coconut, requiring somewhat different techniques. That's what Jolie's been working on, techniques adapted specifically for sabal palm. This is a special opportunity to learn from her.
The event officially runs 10-1, but we'll probably be there earlier preparing palm leaves, so feel free to arrive early if you want to help. And some of us might stay a bit late finishing our creations and cleaning up, so people are welcome to stay and help with that also. See you there!
