In celebration of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina's 500-year birth anniversary, Cantorei, the professional vocal ensemble of St. James Cathedral, presents Palestrina's Pope Marcellus Mass along with music by his contemporaries Orlandus Lassus, Francisco Guerrero, and Tomás Luis de Victoria.
The Missa Papae Marcelli, or Pope Marcellus Mass, is Palestrina's best-know mass, and one of the pinnacles of polyphonic choral music. It was written c.1562 in honor of Pope Marcellus II, who was pope for a mere three weeks in 1555.
