PALESTINE, MILITARISM & THE RIGHT TO PROTEST
About this Event
Tickets: Free, £5, £10 solidarity, donation
Our government has actively facilitated Israel’s continuing genocide in Gaza, and is turning to increasingly authoritarian measures to silence opposition to it.
It has supported Trump’s deadly assaults on Iran and Lebanon, hampered the prospect of peace in Ukraine, and is at the forefront of mass remilitarisation across Europe.
The MOD is drawing up plans for the 'mass mobilisation' of civilian volunteers, hyping up the threat of a 'full blown war'. Here and across Europe the political and military elites talk of pumping more cash into the production of weapons, saying we will have to sacrifice public services and pay more for the continent's 'defence'. Their support for warfare over welfare is clear.
Working people are being squeezed by the rocketing cost of living as a result of the war on Iran. Public money that should be spent on repairing our broken NHS, transport, education and housing is being swept away into the bottomless pockets of the arms manufacturers.
Meanwhile Stop the War's vice chair Chris Nineham and PSC's director Ben Jamal were found guilty at Westminster Magistrate's Court for peacefully protesting genocide on 18 January last year. We are appealing the outrageous verdict!
This landmark case is part of a sustained attack on our right to protest and speak out for Palestine, and the ramifications will impact on all those who wish to protest government policy whatever the issue. Legislation is currently going through Parliament to further restrict our rights.
Join us for this important discussion on the relentless drive to war, the attacks on our civil liberties and the growing international movement against in opposition.
Speakers:
• Chris Nineham, Stop the War Coalition vice chair
• Sarah Kilpatrick, National Education Union Deputy General Secretary
• Humaira Khan, Newcastle City Green Party councillor Wingrove ward
• Mick Bowman, Trade Unions for Palestine Network NE
