At a time when the new Israeli government is clearly announcing its intentions to annex more Palestinian territory and when more and more human rights organisations consider Israel guilty of the crime of apartheid, this conference is an opportunity to take stock of the situation in Palestine/Israel with two exceptional speakers, Muhammad Shehada and Yehuda Shaul, who are visiting Brussels. The so called -status quo- in Palestine and Israel has been anything but static. In reality it has always been a slow but determined slide towards full annexation of the Palestinian Westbank. The new Israeli government, the most extreme and most religious in Israel’s history, is adding fuel to the fire. They have openly announced an annexation agenda. Be it through a massive increase in settlement building and destruction of Palestinian property or through transferring the governance over the occupied people from military to civilian rule. Meanwhile more and more human rights organizations are concluding that the Israeli government is committing the crime of Apartheid. In the face of this deteriorating situation, the international community continues to deplore the recurrent -cycles of violence- but refuses to address its root causes. The daily violations of international law continue with almost complete impunity for Israel.
Where is this leading? What are the goals and strategies of both Israeli and Palestinian authorities in the short and longer term? How is the matter being discussed within Palestinian and Israeli societies? And what should international actors do, in particular the European Union and Belgium, to break this seemingly endless cycle of violence and allow hope to return.
We have the opportunity to discuss this with two exceptional speakers:
