About this Event
Wedad, a social work professor from Gaza, lost her husband and home in an air strike and now lives in a tent with other families who have lost everything. Jamila, a social worker in Bethlehem, faces restricted access to clients in the C-Zone and struggles with underfunded interventions, which prevent clients from reaching welfare services. Nabila, a professor in Nablus, grapples with presenting Eurocentric social work methods to students in a context where it’s difficult to distinguish between client, social worker, and instructor roles at checkpoints. These individual cases reflect broader systemic issues related to life under occupation, highlighting the profound impact of the humanitarian crisis on social work practice in Palestine, where sorrow permeates daily life.
Dr Ziad Faraj, a practising youth social worker based in Palestine who recently completed his PhD at the University of Birmingham, will be the keynote speaker. His book ‘Community Social Work in Palestine: From Resilience to National Resistance’ was published by Bristol University Press in 2022.
