About this Event
We are honoured to welcome Michael Hill Smith AM MW, one of Australia’s most influential wine figures, for an evening celebrating cool-climate expression, site-driven winemaking and the evolution of modern Australian fine wine.
A co-founder of Shaw + Smith, Tolpuddle Vineyard and MMAD Vineyard, Michael has played a defining role in shaping Australia’s contemporary wine landscape. His work is guided by a deep belief in vineyard character, balance and longevity, with a particular focus on cool-climate regions and thoughtful stewardship of exceptional sites.
Michael’s journey began in the Adelaide Hills, where he co-founded Shaw + Smith with his cousin Martin Shaw. Today, the winery stands as a benchmark for the region, producing wines of precision and purity that have earned international acclaim. Recently named Matthew Jukes’ Winery of the Year, Shaw + Smith continues to set the standard for elegance and consistency in Australian Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.
A chance visit to Tasmania in 2011 led Michael and Martin to Tolpuddle Vineyard, now widely regarded as one of Australia’s most important single sites. Tolpuddle’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have become reference points for Tasmanian fine wine, celebrated for their finesse, energy and ability to age gracefully.
More recently, Michael has turned his focus to Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale with MMAD Vineyard, home to remarkable old-vine plantings of Grenache, Shiraz and Chenin Blanc. Here, he is helping to unlock the next chapter of one of Australia’s great historic vineyards, crafting wines defined by texture, clarity and quiet power.
Beyond the vineyard, Michael’s influence on the global wine world is profound. He became the first Master of Wine based outside the UK in 1988 and has since shaped wine education and judging at the highest level. Awarded the Order of Australia for his contribution to the industry, he remains a passionate ambassador for Australian wine, sharing its stories with humility, insight and an unwavering commitment to quality.
The evening will offer a rare opportunity to explore these iconic projects side by side, with a selection of wines that capture Michael’s vision across regions and styles.
