Painting with Soft Pastel Workshop: Georgia O'Keeffe - Inspired
About this Event
Painting with Soft Pastels: Georgia O’Keeffe-Inspired Flowers
In this class, you’ll explore the expressive and tactile world of soft pastels, creating a striking close-up floral artwork inspired by the bold and beautiful paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe.
You’ll begin by learning the fundamentals of working with pastels – from layering and blending colours to creating soft transitions, depth, and texture. We’ll look closely at how O’Keeffe transformed flowers through dramatic cropping, simplified shapes, and flowing organic forms, using these ideas to create your own vibrant floral composition.
Rather than painting a flower in the traditional way, you’ll experiment with scale and composition, zooming in on petals and details until they become almost abstract. You’ll explore how subtle shifts in colour, light, and shadow can give petals a sense of movement and form.
Soft pastels are wonderfully forgiving and full of possibility, perfect for both beginners and experienced artists. The process is intuitive, relaxing, and highly satisfying, as you blend and build layers of colour to gradually bring your flower to life on paper.
By the end of the class, you’ll take home a finished pastel artwork full of colour, movement, and beautiful organic shapes - your own contemporary take on florals through O’Keeffe’s distinctive lens.
All materials will be provided. Please bring your own apron or wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dusty!
You’re welcome to BYOB and enjoy your hot or cold drink while you create.
