Why take this course?

Watercolour art has a special magic. A wash of colour, a quick sketch, a line that catches the light or a quiet detail from everyday life can become the start of something personal and expressive. This practical course is for anyone who would like to explore drawing and watercolour in a supported, friendly setting, whether you are just beginning or returning to art after time away.

Guided by your tutor, Emma, you will build confidence with your painting and develop your watercolour techniques. With plenty of hands-on painting opportunities, you will also learn classical techniques in a more subtle way, relating them to examples by various artists (such as Cezanne, Turner, or Hockney), observing how they use line, colour, tone and composition to create atmosphere, feeling and meaning. You’ll explore sketching, washes, glazing, colour mixing, graded colour and cross-hatching as you create your own original artworks

By the end of the course, you should feel more able to experiment, make choices about your own work and enjoy the creative process without worrying about getting everything right. If you are a more experienced painter, you will find this course enriching, as it also contains more sophisticated aspects of colour theory and composition.

This is a live, tutor led course. Learning with like-minded people, there will be lots of opportunities to share your own knowledge and ideas and to hear from others.

No previous knowledge is needed, just an interest in the topic and a willingness to explore and share ideas.
